", Greek for "The Border Station") sits inside a real 19th century railway station, in the small village of Vyronia (also written Byronia or Vyroneia, Βυρώνεια in Greek), a short drive north of the lake. 

The station opened in 1896 and closed in 2005. It sat empty for years until Lefteris Savvidis restored it and turned it into a taverna, with the old ticket office now a small shop selling local products. Lefteris still runs the place and cooks there himself.

The building has real history behind it. In 1913, at the end of the Second Balkan War, this was the headquarters of the Greek army, and it's where King Constantine I and Prime Minister Venizelos met with Bulgaria to negotiate an armistice, under the same plane trees still standing today.

The kitchen focuses on local Serres specialties: bouyourdi, kavourma with eggs, traditional pies, sausages from nearby Irakleia, buffalo kebab with yogurt, buffalo souvlaki, fried rabbit liver, and smoked trout, all paired with ouzo from the region.

It's a bit out of the way, and for us, it's one of the best tables around the lake.
